Sunak’s Record a Serious Cause for Concern

Independence is the only route to escape from unelected Tory Governments.

The SNP has said that “out of touch” Rishi Sunak’s record is a serious cause for concern for households and public services, as the unelected Tory Prime Minister hinted that his government is set to inflict another wave of Tory austerity.

As the Tory-made cost of living crisis spirals out of control, with inflation at a 40-year high, Sunak warned of “difficult decisions” ahead.

The SNP’s Westminster Deputy leader stated that Sunak’s time in office was already a clear sign of the looming threat facing families.

The party highlighted that Rishi Sunak –

  • Scrapped the Â£20-a-week uplift to Universal Credit which slashed the incomes of 6 million people by £1,040 a year.
  • Bragged about diverting public funds from deprived urban areas to wealthy, Tory-voting towns.
  • Was found to have held a US green card while holding the post of Chancellor – raising questions over whether or not he avoided paying more tax in the UK.
  • Imposed a hard Brexit under Boris Johnson which delivered a hammer blow to the economy and businesses, and ripped away opportunities.
  • Said it would be “silly” to deliver support for families struggling with rising energy bills.
  • Scrapped the furlough scheme prematurely despite warnings of mass job losses.
  • Rejected calls to extend free school meals as families grappled with the economic crisis due to Covid.

Commenting, the SNP’s Westminster Deputy leader Kirsten Oswald MP said:

“As the Tories impose their third Prime Minister in two months, without giving voters a say, there is real alarm over the damaging policies Rishi Sunak is set to impose at this critical time.

“Rather than setting out a clear message that the UK government will support and protect people during this Tory-made economic crisis, Rishi Sunak used his first speech as Prime Minister to hint that he will usher in a new wave of austerity to further entrench the poverty the Tories have caused.

“His record in office is already a serious cause for concern for what’s on the horizon for struggling families and businesses.

“From slashing Universal Credit, imposing an extreme Brexit, refusing to deliver meaningful support as the cost of living crisis worsened, and raising taxes on everyone else while his own family avoided them, Rishi Sunak shares the blame for the economic crisis and the hardship facing millions of people across Scotland and the UK.

“It’s clear that the only route to escape a new wave of Tory austerity and economic chaos under Westminster control is to become an independent country.”
