Inverness welcomed thousands of runners and supporters this weekend as the 2025 Baxters Loch Ness Marathon & Festival of Running delivered another unforgettable, sold-out celebration of sport and community spirit.
A record 10,700 people took part across the two-day event, with runners from around the world descending on the Highlands to tackle one of the most scenic marathon courses in the world.
From elite athletes chasing records to local families enjoying the 5K and Wee Nessie runs, this year’s festival welcomed participants of all ages and abilities.
In the men’s marathon, Alex Milne of Hercules Wimbledon AC broke the course record with a remarkable time of 2:15:46.
In the women’s race, Melissah Gibson of 100 Marathon Club claimed her third consecutive win, crossing the line in 2:43:08.
The Baxters River Ness 10K was equally impressive, with Sean Chalmers of Aberdeen AAC finishing in 28:59, and Caitlyn Heggie of Inverness Harriers taking the women’s title in 36:04.
Lachlan Thomas (Ross County AC) and Hayleigh Reid (Young Meldrum Runners) led the field in the 5K, while hundreds more from local clubs and schools embraced the challenge.
More than half of all 5K participants were under 18, and 300 children under five completed the popular Wee Nessie event at Bught Park.
“What an incredible weekend we’ve had here in the Highlands,” said Malcolm Sutherland, CEO of Caledonian Concepts.
“The atmosphere in Inverness and along the shores of Loch Ness was truly special.
“It’s always inspiring to see people of all ages and abilities enjoying the event.”
The festival extended far beyond the race routes, with a vibrant weekend of live music, local food, pipes and drums, family entertainment, and athlete Q&As, transforming Inverness into a hub of Highland celebration.
Lizzie Taylor, Challenge Events Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, thanked the charity’s runners:
“Your dedication and generosity help us be there for people living with cancer when they need us most.”
Audrey Baxter, Executive Chairman and Group CEO of Baxters, praised the community spirit:
“Every year we are inspired by those who take part and challenge themselves to be different, be better.
“The buzz in the area this year was second to none.”
