Police Scotland has named the three fishermen involved in the disappearance of a fishing vessel off the Isle of Lewis, confirming that 49 year old Douglas Craigie was the man whose body was recovered during the search.
His crewmates, Norman Murray, 40, who is known as Tam, and Murdo Morrison, 23, remain missing as emergency services continue searching for them and their vessel, Kilda, near the Port of Ness.
All three men are from the Isle of Lewis, where the incident has brought considerable concern and sadness to local communities.
Police believe Kilda left Brevaig on the west coast of Lewis at approximately 7.30am on Tuesday 13 October, travelling towards the Port of Ness area where the crew intended to work.
When the vessel failed to return that evening, concerns were raised and the disappearance was reported to police at around 11.35pm.
An extensive search was launched involving HM Coastguard, the RNLI and Police Scotland.
The body of Mr Craigie was recovered from the area at approximately 2.45am on Wednesday 14 October.
Despite continuing efforts by emergency services, Norman Murray and Murdo Morrison remain unaccounted for, and the missing vessel has not been located.
Police are treating both men as missing people while searches continue.
Chief Inspector Ross McCartney, local area commander for the Western Isles, said:
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic incident.
“The families of all three men involved are being provided with specialist support as our searches continue.
“We would ask that the privacy of the families of all three men are respected at this difficult time.
“We are working closely with the HM Coastguard and RNLI to search for the vessel and the two missing men
“We know that the local community will be keen to help in any way they can.
“However, conditions are very challenging and I would urge people not to put themselves at any risk.
“Please do not attempt to carry out searches in areas which put you at risk of harm.
“Instead, if you believe you may have any information which could assist emergency services then please call 101 quoting reference 3575 of 13 October.
“A police presence will remain in the Port of Ness area and if you have any concerns or information then I would urge you to speak to one of our officers.”
The warning comes as difficult conditions around the northern coastline of Lewis continue to present challenges for those involved in the search.
Police have urged members of the public not to attempt their own searches in dangerous coastal areas, regardless of their understandable wish to help.
Officers remain in the Port of Ness area and are available to speak with anyone who may have information about the vessel or its movements.
The families of Douglas Craigie, Norman Murray and Murdo Morrison are receiving specialist support as the operation continues.
Anyone who can assist should contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference 3575 of 13 October 2026.
