Tory Austerity Will Take a Wrecking Ball to Public Services

The SNP has warned Rishi Sunak’s austerity 2.0 plan to make taxpayers foot the bill for the Tory economic crisis will “take a wrecking ball to public services”.

Ahead of the SNP opposition day debate in the House of Commons, Ian Blackford MP warned millions of families are “paying the price for Tory incompetence on the economy” amid reports the Tory government is planning to raise taxes, slash public services and impose real terms cuts to public sector pay in order to fill the black hole it created.

The SNP Westminster Leader will use a motion in the Commons to call for benefits and pensions to be increased in line with inflation – and will say independence is the only way to keep Scotland safe from Tory cuts and the long-term economic decline caused by Brexit.

Commenting, SNP Westminster Leader Ian Blackford MP said:

“The constant crisis of Westminster control has shown that independence is the only way to keep Scotland safe and get back on the path to prosperity.

“Millions of families are paying the price for Tory incompetence on the economy.

“The disastrous Tory mini-budget has cost families dearly – and Brexit has set the UK on a path of long-term decline.

“Rishi Sunak’s plans to impose austerity 2.0 will take a wrecking ball to public services – and squeeze household incomes even further, at the worst possible time.

“The Tory government must scrap its plans for a new wave of cuts, and instead deliver meaningful help at a time of crisis – including by uprating benefits and pensions with inflation.

“But with the Tories and Labour both intent on trashing the economy with Brexit, costing Scotland billions of pounds, there is no route to safety shackled to the failing UK state.

“The only way to get Scotland’s economy on the right track is with independence in Europe.”
