A new partnership between the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) and Nairn County Football Club is kicking off a fresh wave of opportunity for students eager to gain real-world experience.

The collaboration will allow students to volunteer across a range of roles with the community-focused Highland League club, building practical skills and industry experience to complement their studies.

Kevin Reid, Chair of Nairn County Football Club, said the club was delighted to welcome UHI students on board.

“We are thrilled to welcome UHI students to Nairn County Football Club,” he said.

“Local partnerships are incredibly important to us.

“It is an exciting time for the club, and we hope to provide students with some valuable hands-on experience in a football environment.”

The partnership, supported by UHI Futures, the university’s careers and employability centre will offer flexible volunteering opportunities designed to fit around academic life.

Students can take part in journalism and matchday reporting, photography, digital marketing, website development, event management, sports coaching, injury therapy, and even groundskeeping.

Professor Keith Smyth, Dean of Learning, Teaching and Students at UHI, said the initiative reflects the university’s commitment to connecting study with community impact.

“We are always looking for ways to connect learning with real-world impact,” he said.

“This collaboration with Nairn County Football Club is a perfect opportunity for our students to develop practical skills, contribute to their community, and boost their future career prospects.”

Students from all subject areas across UHI are encouraged to take part.

While an interest in football may help, it is not required, enthusiasm, curiosity, and a willingness to learn are the only essentials.

By getting involved, students will gain the chance to strengthen their teamwork and communication skills, grow their professional networks, and add meaningful experience to their CVs, all while supporting a club that sits at the heart of its community.
