UK Government Jackdaw Decision Reckless Say Greens

Scottish Greens energy and climate spokesperson Mark Ruskell MSP said that the UK Government’s decision to grant final regulatory approval for the Jackdaw gas field off the north east coast is reckless.

Responding to the announcement from the UK Business Secretary, Mr Ruskell said:

“This reckless decision to grant regulatory approval for the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea is another nail in the coffin of the UK Government’s professed climate ambition.

“I said just last week that oil and gas companies would take the Chancellor’s windfall tax rebate as an incentive to drill for more fossil fuels and that’s exactly what’s happening.

“Having recently relabelled dirty gas as green, this Tory government is using all its powers from licensing to taxation to deepen our dependence on oil and gas, just at the time when we should be investing in our massive renewable potential instead.

“This is nothing short of criminal in the middle of a climate emergency.

“For the UK Government it seems that 1.5°C is not alive, it’s dead and buried.

“It’s clear that the only way for Scotland to deliver a just transition and stop the UK Government wrecking the climate is to take full powers over energy, by becoming an independent European nation.”
