Councillors have signed off the 2025/26 Winter Service Plan for Lochaber, which will run from 15 October 2025 to 15 April 2026.

The plan, approved at the Lochaber Area Committee on 11 August, will see gritting operations carried out in line with the budget, staff, and equipment available.

Covering a network of 235km of primary routes, 51km of secondary routes, and 395km of other roads, the service will prioritise key areas to keep Lochaber moving through the colder months.

On average, the area uses around 3,000 tonnes of salt each winter.

Committee Chair, Cllr Kate Willis, said the plan sets out exactly how and where The Highland Council will grit roads and footpaths during the winter.

She urged residents to familiarise themselves with the council’s gritting priorities so they are prepared when the weather turns.

Local communities can also apply via their community council for winter resilience support, including salt and grit bins, scrapers, and reflective waistcoats, to help keep their areas safe.

Councillors have approved gritting plans in which primary routes are treated first, followed by secondary routes and then all ‘other’ routes as resources permit.
