Shetland MSP and Scottish Liberal Democrat, Beatrice Wishart, has welcomed LGBT+ Pride month.

Ms Wishart has reaffirmed her commitment to championing equality for those who identify as LGBT+.

Annually, June is celebrated by LGBT+ people and allies across the country, Shetland will host its first Pride next week.

Wishart has supported Shetland Pride plans with a parliamentary motion in 2021 when ideas were first mooted and with a recorded video advertising the events.

LGBT+ people are more likely to suffer from poor mental health and be victims of crime, as well as being more likely to earn less than their heterosexual counterparts.

Scottish Liberal Democrats continue to campaign for LGBT+ equality and for an end to the harmful practice of sexual orientation and gender identity conversion therapy.

Ms Wishart said:

“Happy Pride to all celebrating it!

“A month for Pride is important, but we must have 12 months of the year where all people can feel that they can be their true self.

“We must not be complacent about equality.

“I look forward to a world where nobody is disadvantaged because of their identity.

“Next week Shetland will host its first Pride and I wish those attending, along with the organisers, a great day.

“Well done to Kerrie and the team for the hard work they have put into arranging the celebration.”
