BBC Launches New Drive to Hear Directly From Young People

The BBC has launched a new initiative to connect more deeply with 16 to 24-year-olds, asking young people across the UK to help shape its future.

Unveiled on 22 October, the UNBOXD campaign is designed to listen to young voices, understand what matters to them, and ensure the BBC remains relevant in a rapidly changing media landscape.

The campaign includes interactive digital workshops, AI-powered chatbot interviews, and partnerships with youth organisations and social media creators.

While more than 870,000 people responded to the BBC’s recent Our BBC, Our Future questionnaire, the broadcaster is now focusing more closely on the experiences and needs of younger audiences.

The campaign will explore everything from how young people decide what to trust online, to their views on emerging technologies like AI, and how they feel the BBC can better reflect their lives.

Kerris Bright, the BBC’s Chief Customer Officer, said the organisation must evolve in step with younger generations.

“It’s vital that we understand what matters most to young audiences today and that they can shape our services of tomorrow,” she said.

“UNBOXD is about listening, learning, and making sure the BBC reflects their lives, interests and ambitions for a long time to come.”

The project is also being run in collaboration with Children in Need and other UK-wide youth-focused organisations.

At the heart of the campaign is a short online questionnaire, now live on the BBC UNBOXD website, where 18 to 24-year-olds can have their say.

The campaign will culminate in a live celebration event in Birmingham early next year, where young people will explore the findings, engage with BBC content, and celebrate their part in shaping its future.

The results of the UNBOXD campaign will be used by BBC teams commissioning programmes and content for younger audiences and will help guide the organisation’s future planning as part of the Charter Review process.
