Three Lochaber parishioners have been recognised for their dedication and service to the catholic church by Pope Francis.
Margaret Sargent of St Margaret’s, Roy Bridge, David MacFarlane of St Joesph’s, Spean Bridge and Anne Davies of St Finnan’s, Invergarry, have all been awarded the Benemerenti Medal.
Bishop of Argyll and the Isles, Brian McGee, presented the trio with their Benemerenti Medals, on behalf of the Pope, at St Margaret’s Church in Roy Bridge on Sunday 10th of November.
Parish priest of St Margaret’s, St Joesph’s and St Finnan’s, Father Danny Convery, who made the application to the Vatican for the awards, said they were three outstanding parishioners for their care and dedication shown over many decades.
The medal is awarded to the clergy and laity for long and exceptional service to the church.
It was first awarded by Pope Pius VI (1775–1799) as a military decoration.
In 1925, the concept of awarding this medal as a mark of recognition to persons in service of the Church, became acceptable.
The current version of the Benemerenti medal was designed by Pope Paul VI. The medal is a gold Greek Cross depicting Christ with his hand raised in blessing.
