If you’re eager to keep cycling through winter but feel unsure about tackling the roads in darker months, help is at hand.
HiTrans Active Travel Behaviour Change Officer, Murray Stewart, in partnership with “Cycling with Anne” founder Anne Sayer, is offering two free taster courses designed to build confidence and teach the essentials of cycling at night.
The sessions, limited to six participants each, are scheduled for Tuesday 4 February at Stromness Academy and Tuesday 11 February at Kirkwall Grammar School, both running from 7pm to 9pm.
Each session starts off-road, giving participants a chance to build their skills in a safe environment before venturing on a short ride in town.
Feedback from attendees will play a vital role in shaping future cycling support initiatives.
Safety is the top priority, with precautions in place to ensure visibility and compliance with the Highway Code.
Attendees must ensure their bikes are roadworthy, but some free winter cycling gear will be provided to help participants stay visible and prepared.
Anne Sayer, a cycling instructor and lifelong enthusiast, shared her passion for getting people back on their bikes.
“Cycling is freedom,” she said, “It’s a fantastic way to stay fit, save money, and enjoy getting around.
“I’ve been cycling since I was a child, but it hasn’t always been easy.
“Now it’s my main way of travelling short distances, and I love the sense of independence it brings.
“I want others to feel that same joy and confidence on the road.
“My teaching style is all about support and empowerment.
“Whether you’re a total beginner or looking to fine-tune your skills, I believe cycling is something everyone can enjoy.
“With the right guidance and a bit of encouragement, anyone can get back in the saddle.”
Murray Stewart echoed her enthusiasm, encouraging people to see cycling as an active, sustainable alternative to car journeys.
“We don’t need to use cars for every trip, especially the shorter ones,” he said.
“Even in Orkney, there are good weather days during winter, and cycling is a great way to make the most of them.
“Physical and mental health benefits aside, cycling is also better for the environment.
“We’re fortunate to have Anne’s expertise on our doorstep, and these sessions are a great opportunity for everyone—from beginners to regular cyclists looking to boost their night-riding skills.
“As always, we encourage all road users, whether they’re drivers, cyclists, pedestrians or horse riders, to be courteous and considerate to one another.
“Respect on the roads is key to everyone’s safety.”
