Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has launched its annual winter safety campaign: Cùm sàbhailte, cùm gu math sa Gheamhradh seo! or Keep Safe, Keep Well this Winter! encouraging islanders to prepare early and take simple steps to stay safe during the colder months.

This year’s campaign focuses on readiness, resilience, and community care, reminding residents that a little planning now can make a big difference later.

The initiative brings together practical guidance on a wide range of topics, including winter health, fire safety, outdoor precautions, and emergency contacts.

It also includes a directory of local support services to help residents find assistance quickly when needed.

Cllr Paul Steele, Leader of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, said the message behind the campaign is simple but vital.

“The overarching message of this guidance is one of taking a few simple, planned steps now that will make things easier, and crucially a lot safer for you, your loved ones, and those within your wider community, throughout the coming winter months,” he said.

“I would like to encourage everyone in our communities to take the time to read this guidance and, most importantly, to look out for one another through the winter months.”

The Keep Safe, Keep Well resource provides advice on preparing homes for winter, staying warm and active, preventing slips and falls, and checking on neighbours, especially the elderly or vulnerable.

It also highlights fire safety measures and emergency numbers for anyone needing urgent help during severe weather or power cuts.

The campaign aims to strengthen community resilience across the Western Isles, promoting awareness, neighbourliness, and support networks that can make a real difference when conditions worsen.

Residents can access the full Keep Safe, Keep Well! resource online, where it is available to view or download through the Comhairle’s website.
