Highlands & Islands MSP, Maree Todd (pictured), has welcomed the passing of the Coronavirus (Scotland) Bill which gained unanimous cross-party support in the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday [01/02/20].

The emergency legislation introduced under the Coronavirus (Scotland) Bill includes substantial further powers and measures which will help protect the public, maintain essential public services and support the economy.

Powers laid out in the bill include measures to protect renters from eviction by altering the notice period across both private and social rented sectors, plus adjustments to criminal procedure and other aspects of the justice system.

Commenting, Maree Todd MSP said:

“In a time of financial uncertainty, I’m pleased to see that private and social tenants in the Highlands & Islands will be given increased protection from eviction.

“To relieve financial pressures further, under this bill, people and small businesses that are struggling to repay debts due to the outbreak will now be eligible to apply for a six-month ‘breathing space’ period.

“This is the most comprehensive piece of emergency legislation to ever be introduced to the Scottish Parliament and it is absolutely essential to ensure the Scottish Government’s response to Covid-19 remains a priority.”

“There is no doubt that this will be a difficult period for everyone, but I’m reassured by the abundance of goodwill demonstrated in communities across the Highlands & Islands.

“We will get through this together – stay strong folks.”
