Three decades spent studying the skies are being marked by a visit from guest speaker Steve Owens.

The Highlands Astronomical Society (HAS) is marking three decades of bringing together amateur astronomers to study the wonders of the universe.

To mark the occasion, the group is hosting a special event in Inverness on Saturday 23 November 2024.

Steve Owens, Science Operations Manager at Glasgow Science Centre, astronomer, science communicator, and author of Stargazing for Dummies, will be presenting ‘Dark Skies’ at Smithton Free Church.

Invernessian Steve is a recognised dark skies consultant and has received awards for helping set up several designated dark sky sites.

The event is open to all, and tickets can be purchased at  Steve Owens – HAS Anniversary Event – EventBrite Booking

HAS was formed in 1994 after the merger of the Moray Astronomical Society and the Inverness Astronomical Society.

With over 100 members, HAS hosts monthly club meetings at The Café, Smithton Church, in addition to regular stargazing nights and daytime workshops at its Observatory at Culloden Battlefield, near Inverness.

Dave Davidson, HAS Chair, said:

“We recognise that 30 years is a significant anniversary for any voluntary organisation.

“We’re delighted that Steve has agreed to come to Inverness to help us celebrate and can’t wait for his Dark Skies talk.

“The event is open to all ages, and we’ll have club members on hand to answer any questions about what we do and how anyone with an interest in our universe can join in.

“We pride ourselves on being an Active Astronomy Club, welcoming anyone no matter their level of knowledge and hosting regular events and meetups, even when the skies are not as clear as we would like!”
