The Highland Council’s Employability team has announced a groundbreaking event: the first Highland-wide virtual jobs fair, set to run from 11th to 15th November to coincide with Scottish Careers Week 2024.
Delivered by a coalition of partners under the Local Employability Partnership for the West—including The Highland Council, Skills Development Scotland, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the Department for Work and Pensions, Developing the Young Workforce, and UHI North West and Hebrides—this fair is designed to bring career opportunities directly to people across the region.
This online event opens a flexible gateway for anyone seeking fresh job prospects, considering a career change, or re-entering the workforce after a break, allowing them to attend from the comfort of their own home.
Participants will get the chance to connect directly with an impressive line-up of employers, including notable names like Torbhaig Distillery, Carr Gomm, Dounreay, CalMac, Sheil Buses, BEAR Scotland, Balfour Beatty, and even The Highland Council itself.
Each employer will host sessions highlighting full-time, part-time, and seasonal roles, alongside apprenticeship schemes and other initiatives aimed at attracting a steady stream of talent year-round.
Councillor Ken Gowans, Chair of the Highland Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee, hailed the virtual fair as an exceptional platform for showcasing the wealth of job opportunities across the Highlands, offering chances for people to develop and build skills on the job.
“We hope the online format will encourage flexibility for attendees, sparing them the need for travel and letting them drop in and out as their schedules allow,” said Gowans, noting that the fair’s accessible format means people across the Highlands, regardless of location or circumstances, can connect directly with employers offering real work opportunities.
With the Highland Council’s Employability team available throughout the week for support, this event is crafted to ease people into the job market and provide meaningful connections without any logistical barriers.
Gilliam Unger, Team Leader with Skills Development Scotland, echoed this enthusiasm, saying:
“SDS is thrilled to partner in organising this event, which opens the door for residents across the Highlands to learn about a range of career paths, both locally and further afield.”
