Kakatsitsi Drumming Group Performs for Lochaber Schools

Must read

The pupils of Ardnamurchan High School, Strontian Primary School and Strontian nursery were treated to a performance from the Kakatsitsi Master Drummers.

Kakatsitsi are a group of traditional drummers, dancers, and singers from the Ga tribe of Southern Ghana.

Their music takes traditional rhythms and chants from their own Ga tradition, and those of a variety of other West African cultures, then rearranging them in a modern and accessible way.

The group have developed a particularly strong educational dimension, whereby they visit local schools or youth & community centres in the week running up to a performance to teach a few simple rhythms, chants and dances.

Cluster Head Teacher, Christopher Millar-Craig said:

“A great morning was had with the pupils thoroughly enjoying themselves.

“The whole 2-18 campus enjoyed an informative concert that shared both music and an explanation on the role which drumming plays in their culture.

“A number of workshops also took place where pupils got to play as a drumming group and learn some dances and songs.

“We would like to extend our thanks to the group for taking the time to visit, engage, and perform for our children and young people.”

The group also brought with them a jewellery stall that proved very popular with adults and pupils.
