Kingussie claimed another victory over Badenoch rivals Newtonmore on Saturday 10 October as Glasgow Mid Argyll celebrated a men’s and women’s Mòd Cup double during a weekend when unplayable pitches disrupted the closing stages of the shinty season.
With the major cup competitions largely completed and the league programme approaching its conclusion, there were fewer matches than usual, but those which survived produced plenty of talking points.
Kingussie followed up their dramatic Camanachd Cup Final victory over Newtonmore last month with another 2–1 win, this time in the Mowi Premiership.
Newtonmore took the lead after 33 minutes through Conor Jones, giving the visitors the advantage in another fiercely contested meeting between the Badenoch neighbours.
Kingussie responded in the second half when Lee Bain equalised in the 55th minute before Ruaridh Anderson struck the winner in the 73rd minute.
Anderson had also scored both goals in Kingussie’s 2–1 Camanachd Cup Final victory over Newtonmore in September, making him the decisive figure in two important derby victories within three weeks.
Newtonmore finished the Premiership encounter with nine players after both Conor Jones and Struan Ross were sent off.
The victory completed a successful few days for Kingussie, whose North Division 1 side had defeated Glengarry 5–2 on Thursday evening.
Glengarry had taken an early lead through Rhuairaidh MacDonald, but goals from Jack Nelson, Dylan Justice and Svend Pederson put Kingussie firmly in control before the interval.
Arran Campbell added another in the second half, with Justice scoring his second of the evening, while MacDonald completed his own double for the visitors.
Elsewhere, Glasgow Mid Argyll enjoyed a memorable afternoon as the club secured both trophies in the annual Mòd Cup competitions.
In the Aviemore Trophy, Glasgow Mid Argyll defeated Aberdour 5–1 after making a blistering start which saw Calum Morrison open the scoring in the very first minute.
Logan Adam doubled the advantage after nine minutes before Ryan MacKenzie struck twice in the 15th and 25th minutes to establish a commanding four-goal lead.
Finlay Penman added a fifth in the 50th minute, with Calum Murray scoring Aberdour’s consolation six minutes later.
There was further success for Glasgow Mid Argyll in the Learn Gaelic Trophy, the Women’s Mòd Cup, as they came from behind to defeat Glasgow University 3–1.
Hannah MacDonald gave Glasgow University the lead after seven minutes, but Lexie MacKenzie equalised in the 29th minute to bring the sides level.
Rose Watson put Glasgow Mid Argyll ahead in the 63rd minute before Beth Page completed the comeback nine minutes later to secure the trophy.
The two victories ensured both the men’s and women’s Mòd Cup silverware went to Glasgow Mid Argyll.
Away from the completed fixtures, unplayable fields caused widespread disruption across the remaining league programme.
In the Premiership, Kyles Athletic’s meeting with Oban Camanachd and Skye’s match against Fort William were both postponed.
The National Division fixture between Inveraray and Bute also fell victim to the conditions, alongside North Division 1 matches involving Kinlochshiel and Skye, and Strathglass and Newtonmore.
North Division 2 suffered similar disruption, with Lochcarron against Lochaber and Kilmallie against Beauly both postponed.
With seven fixtures called off, the weekend highlighted the difficulties clubs face in completing their remaining commitments as autumn weather begins to take its toll.
Nevertheless, Kingussie’s latest derby victory and Glasgow Mid Argyll’s double cup success ensured there was still plenty to celebrate as the 2026 shinty season moves towards its conclusion.
