Highlands & Islands MSP Maree Todd (pictured) has paid tribute to nurses on International Nurses Day for going ‘above and beyond to keep us safe’.

This year’s International Nurses Day (May 12th) not only falls on the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth but 2020 has also been named the International Year of the Nurse & Midwife by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Highlands & Islands MSP Maree Todd said:

“This year’s International Nurses Day is particularly poignant with the current public health crisis where our nurses are at the forefront of our fight against Covid-19.

“I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to our nurses who continue to work tirelessly on the frontline where they are going above and beyond to keep us safe.

“I know that like me, everyone across the Highlands & Islands, and throughout Scotland, will be forever grateful for the hard work and dedication shown from our nurses and all frontline workers.

“They have been invaluable in the national response to this public health emergency and I would like to take this opportunity to show my appreciation for their remarkable work, not just throughout the Covid-19 outbreak, but all year round.

Ms Todd adds:

“We can do our bit in supporting our frontline workers by continuing to follow the advice.

“This means only leaving your home for the following reasons:

To shop for basic necessities – but only once a day, at the most

To take exercise, alone or with your household, not in groups

Medical reasons or providing care or support to a vulnerable person

To travel to essential work if it absolutely cannot be done from home

“Our message remains clear – stay home, protect the NHS and save lives.”
