Ariane Burgess, Scottish Green MSP for the Highlands & Islands, has today welcomed the submission of a planning application proposal for a new 10km active travel route connecting Aviemore and Carrbridge.

This significant development aims to enhance connectivity and promote sustainable travel within the Cairngorms National Park.

The route will provide a wholly segregated pathway for pedestrians, cyclists, and other non-motorised users.

The route will start to the north of Dougal Drive in Aviemore, connecting with the existing Speyside Way, and will continue northwards, passing through Granish Junction, Avielochan, and Kinveachy Junction before reaching Carrbridge.

Ms Burgess emphasised the importance of such infrastructure projects in fostering community connections and promoting active travel.

“This new route is a vital step towards creating a more sustainable and connected future for our communities.

“By providing safe and accessible pathways, we are encouraging healthier lifestyles and reducing our carbon footprint,” said Burgess.

The development will involve the construction of both new pathways and the upgrading and widening of existing infrastructure to 3 metres.

Key features will include priority crossings, a new roundabout at the B9152, A95, and A9 junction, and several sections that run adjacent to the Highland Main Line Railway and the A95 carriageway.

Community consultation has been a cornerstone of this project, with multiple public events and exhibitions held to gather feedback and engage with local residents.

“This project is a testament to the power of community collaboration and the shared vision of a more connected and sustainable future.

“I am proud to support this initiative and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our region.

“It was also made possible thanks to the record funding for active travel investment secured by the Scottish Greens while part of the Scottish Government,” added Burgess.

The planning application marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance active travel infrastructure within the Cairngorms National Park.

The proposed route not only provides a practical solution for daily commutes and recreational activities but also aligns with broader environmental and public health goals.
