The SNP say people are “already seeing through Labour’s empty promises” after a new poll revealed that a majority of Scots believe the new UK Labour government doesn’t understand Scotland.
A survey published by YouGov this morning shows that 61% of respondents think Keir Starmer’s government has little to no understanding of the issues facing Scotland, with a plurality believing a change in government at Westminster makes no meaningful difference.
When it comes to those who voted Labour at the general election in July, less than half said that Scotland is better off since they won power.
Commenting, SNP MSP Fulton MacGregor said:
“In this watershed week in UK politics, with the new Labour government set to impose significant austerity on our public services, this poll confirms that Labour doesn’t understand Scotland.
“As long as Labour adhere to Tory fiscal rules, implementing a fresh programme of austerity cuts, the priorities of people across Scotland will be less and less of a consideration at Westminster.
“In contrast, the SNP is coming together to stand up for Scotland, to work for a better future where we campaign for independence by focussing on and delivering on people’s everyday concerns.
“The SNP Government in Scotland will always stay true to our values by focusing on building a social democratic country – but Westminster austerity threatens this.
“The decisions Labour are taking ignore and risk exacerbating the challenges facing many people across Scotland, and people know it.
“Scotland must unite against Labour cuts to the people’s priorities, and rest assured the SNP will remain focused on these priorities – offering a real alternative to Westminster rule.”
