Moray Council has officially approved a new Woodland and Forestry Strategy, setting out a clear plan for the future of the region’s forests.

The strategy was given the green light following a meeting of the Planning and Regulatory Services Committee on Tuesday, 11 March.

Developed with expert input, the plan will guide decision-making on woodland expansion, forest management, and funding distribution.

It is aimed at landowners, managers, Scottish Forestry, Moray Council, and key stakeholders who play a role in shaping the region’s natural landscape.

The strategy supports Scotland’s wider efforts to transition to net zero, aligning with the Scottish Government’s drive to restore biodiversity and enhance sustainability.

Beyond environmental benefits, the plan aims to improve community health, well-being, and economic growth in the region.

Moray is already one of Scotland’s most wooded regions, with trees covering 34% of the landscape.

Chair of Moray Council’s Planning and Regulatory Committee, Councillor David Gordon, welcomed the move, highlighting its significance in supporting local communities and the economy.

He described the strategy as a vital step in ensuring Moray remains a leader in sustainable forestry and environmental stewardship.

The approval marks a commitment to balancing conservation with development, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy Moray’s rich natural heritage.
