People across Moray who have ever considered helping shape the future of their communities are being encouraged to find out what it takes to become a councillor ahead of the 2027 local government elections.
Moray Council is organising three free information events aimed at giving prospective candidates a clearer understanding of local government and the responsibilities that come with representing their communities.
The sessions are open to people from all backgrounds, whether they are seriously considering putting their names forward or simply curious about how decisions affecting their communities are made.
Those attending will have the opportunity to hear directly from elected councillors about their experiences, the demands of public office and the practical realities of representing local people.
The events will also explain the election process, the responsibilities of councillors and the support available to anyone considering standing.
Two of the sessions will be delivered through Elect Her, an initiative designed to encourage and support more women to become involved in politics and public life.
The first Elect Her event will take place at Moray Council headquarters on Wednesday 25 November 2026 at 11.30am.
A second session will be held online on Wednesday 2 December at 6pm, providing an opportunity for those unable to attend in person to take part.
Both events will focus on helping women explore the possibility of standing for election, understand the commitment involved and gain confidence in taking their first steps into local politics.
A further information session, open to anyone interested in becoming a councillor, will take place at Moray Council headquarters on Wednesday 27 January 2027 at 4pm.
Moray Council Chief Executive and Returning Officer Karen Greaves said:
“Councillors play a vital role in shaping the future of our communities and ensuring local people’s voices are reflected in the decisions that affect their everyday lives.
“These events are an opportunity for anyone interested in public service to learn more about what the role involves, ask questions and hear directly from those with experience of local government.
“The Elect Her event will provide a supportive environment for women who may be interested in becoming a councillor and want to understand more about what the role entails.
“Whether you’re ready to stand or simply curious about the process, I would encourage you to come along and find out more.”
Local councillors are responsible for making decisions on services that affect everyday life, including education, housing, roads, social care and the management of public resources.
The role brings opportunities to influence the direction of local communities, but also requires time, commitment and a willingness to engage with residents on a wide range of issues.
By opening up conversations about what being a councillor involves, the council hopes to encourage greater participation from people who might not previously have considered entering local politics.
Anyone interested in attending should register in advance by emailing elections@moray.gov.uk, with joining details provided for the online session.
Further information about the January event will also be made available by the council.
With the next council elections approaching in 2027, the events offer an opportunity for residents to discover whether they could help make a difference in the communities they call home.
