Moray’s starring role in Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster is set to be recognised in the Scottish Parliament as the film’s spectacular Scottish locations continue to attract worldwide attention.

A motion tabled by Moray MSP Laura Mitchell celebrates the use of locations including Culbin Forest, Culbin Sands and Burghead Harbour in The Odyssey, while highlighting the opportunities the film could bring for tourism and the local economy.

The motion also welcomes the launch of a new interactive online map allowing film fans to discover the locations used during production across Moray and Aberdeenshire.

The Odyssey, written, directed and produced by Christopher Nolan, uses the dramatic coastline of north east Scotland to represent Ancient Greece, bringing some of the country’s best known landscapes to cinema audiences around the world.

The motion also recognises the contribution made by local communities during filming, with cast and crew visiting restaurants, shops and leisure businesses across the area.

“The buzz around the place when the filming started brought a real energy here and it’s just amazing to see images of Moray up on the big screen.

“Millions across the world will sit down to watch The Odyssey and see Moray in all its glory what a blessing it is to live in this beautiful part of the world and I am thrilled that it is finally getting the global recognition it deserves.

“With the undoubted success of the film, I hope it encourages people to come to Moray as part of their odyssey to Scotland so they can appreciate our natural beauty in person the more the merrier.

“Scotland’s film sector is expanding rapidly and going from strength to strength I am so glad Moray has seen, and will continue to see, the benefit of that.”

The parliamentary motion highlights the potential for film tourism to bring long term benefits to communities and businesses, expressing hope that audiences inspired by the film will travel to Moray to experience its landscapes for themselves.

Scotland’s screen industry has grown significantly in recent years, with a series of major international productions choosing locations across the Highlands, Islands and north east, helping to showcase the country’s scenery to a global audience while supporting local businesses and jobs.
