New Area of Interest Identified in Search for Missing Lewis Fishermen

Police searching for two missing fishermen off the Isle of Lewis have identified an area of interest near the Ness, marking a significant new development in the continuing operation.

Specialist officers are now working with partner agencies to investigate the area as efforts continue to locate Norman Murray, 40, known as Tam, and Murdo Morrison, 23, who have been missing since Tuesday 13 October.

The two men were aboard the fishing vessel Kilda, which was last known to have been operating close to Port of Ness on the northern coast of Lewis.

Their fellow crew member, Douglas Craigie, was recovered from the sea at approximately 2.45am on Wednesday 14 October.

The discovery of an area of interest offers investigators a more specific location to examine, although Police Scotland has not confirmed what has been detected or whether it is connected to the missing vessel.

Both Norman and Murdo continue to be treated as missing people.

The latest development follows several days of extensive searches and the introduction of a marine exclusion zone for divers between the Butt of Lewis and Port of Ness.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch established the restriction while work continued in the area, with other vessels permitted to operate within the designated waters.

Specialist officers are now working alongside partner organisations to investigate the newly identified area as safely as possible.

Chief Inspector Ross McCartney, local area commander for the Western Isles, said:

“Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this tragic incident.

“We are carrying out extensive work with our partners to further investigate the specific area in as safe a manner as possible.

“We understand how distressing and difficult this time will be for the families and we would ask that their privacy is respected.”

The search has brought considerable concern to communities across Lewis, particularly around Port of Ness, where fishing remains an important part of local life.

Police have acknowledged the willingness of local people to help but continue to stress the dangers of attempting independent searches in challenging coastal and marine conditions.

Chief Inspector McCartney added:

“The exclusion zone remains in place for divers in the area where searches have been carried out.”

He confirmed that vessels can still operate in the area.

“We know the local community are keen to help in any way they can.

“However, we urge people not to put themselves at any risk.

“Please do not attempt to carry out searches in areas which put you at risk of harm.

“If you believe you may have any information which could assist emergency services then please call 101 quoting reference 3575 of 13 October.

“Officers will remain in the Port of Ness area and if you have any concerns or information then I would urge you to speak to them.”

Police have not provided further details about the location or nature of the area now being investigated.

For the families of Norman Murray and Murdo Morrison, the search remains ongoing, with specialist teams continuing their work off the northern coast of Lewis.

Anyone with information that could assist should contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference 3575 of 13 October 2026.
