A brand new nursery in Kirkwall is nearing completion, opening the door to a major opportunity for childcare operators.
The purpose-built facility, positioned beside Orkney College, is designed to welcome up to 51 children from birth to five years old.
With completion expected by mid-April 2025, Orkney Islands Council is now inviting expressions of interest to run the service.
The opportunity comes with a potential contract value of over £6.4 million, based on an eight-year term.
That includes an initial four-year agreement with the possibility of four one-year extensions.
The Council is targeting private or third sector providers to take the reins of the long-awaited nursery.
Councillor Gwenda Shearer, who chairs the Education, Leisure and Housing Committee, says the facility will help fill a much-needed childcare gap in Orkney.
She said there hasn’t been a private or third sector nursery provider in the area for some time.
The Council chose to step in and fund the development, creating what it now sees as an exciting business opportunity.
With the modern building nearly ready, operators are encouraged to step forward and tender.
Councillor Shearer said the new nursery will be a lifeline for many local families.
She noted strong anticipation among parents and carers who are eager for improved childcare provision.
She also emphasised the wider community benefits, including support for working parents and local employment.
Interested parties are being asked to contact the Council’s procurement team for more information.
The application process starts with completing a Single Procurement Document questionnaire online.
The form is available through the Public Contracts Scotland advertising portal.
This marks the first stage of the tendering process to manage and operate the nursery service.
The Council says it is committed to supporting a smooth handover once a suitable operator is selected.
Further updates are expected as the project moves towards its final build stage.
Once open, the nursery is expected to make a significant impact on early years provision in the Orkney area.
It also signals fresh opportunity for childcare providers looking to establish or expand their presence in the Highlands and Islands.
