Reform UK Highlands and Islands MSP Max Bannerman has welcomed the latest progress on the proposed Coul Links golf development, describing it as an important opportunity to strengthen the economy of the North Highlands.

The proposed development near Dornoch has long been the subject of debate, balancing economic opportunities with environmental concerns, and its latest progress has prompted renewed political support.

Mr Bannerman, who lives near Tain and attended Dornoch Academy, said the project could help tackle long standing challenges including depopulation, limited employment opportunities and a lack of inward investment across rural communities.

“This is extremely welcome news for the North Highlands.

“For far too long, our communities have faced depopulation, a lack of investment and limited opportunities for young people to build their futures locally.

“When I was leaving Dornoch Academy just over ten years ago, sadly there were few alternatives other than to go down south for work or education.

“A world class golf destination at Coul Links has the potential to create high quality jobs, support local businesses, boost tourism and encourage further investment across Sutherland and the wider Highlands.

“Visitors don’t just play golf.

“They stay in our hotels, eat in our restaurants, visit local attractions and spend money throughout the local economy.

“The Highlands is already recognised globally for its spectacular golf offering.

“Developments like Coul Links can strengthen that reputation while bringing lasting economic benefits to communities that need them most.”

Mr Bannerman also argued that economic development and environmental protection should work alongside one another rather than being seen as competing priorities.

“Scotland has shown time and again that responsible development and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.

“It is entirely right that developments meet rigorous planning and environmental standards, but we cannot allow Scotland to become a country where investment is endlessly delayed or discouraged by faulty activism.

“Our rural communities deserve the same opportunities for economic growth as anywhere else in the country.

“I welcome this positive step forward and look forward to seeing this investment help secure jobs, prosperity and confidence in the future of the Highlands.”

The Coul Links proposal has attracted significant interest over several years because of its potential economic impact on Sutherland, alongside continued debate about its environmental implications.
