People across the Highlands and Western Isles are being reminded to check their voter registration details or risk missing their chance to vote in the next election.

Every household will soon receive an update from the Electoral Registration Officer as part of the annual canvass, which helps ensure the electoral register is accurate and up to date.

The process also identifies residents who should be registered to vote but are currently missing from the roll.

Frank Finlayson, Electoral Registration Officer for Highland and Western Isles, is urging everyone to look out for official messages in the coming weeks.

“The annual canvass is how we keep the register accurate,” he said.

“To make sure you don’t lose your say at future elections, it’s vital you follow the instructions we send.”

If your name isn’t already on the register, you won’t appear in the correspondence but it’s easy to get registered.

Anyone who needs to register can do so quickly online.

Electoral Commission research shows that up to one million people in Scotland may be missing from the register or listed incorrectly at their current address.

That means they may not be able to vote when it matters most.

Sarah Mackie, Head of the Electoral Commission in Scotland, said the canvass plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy democracy.

“With the Scottish Parliament election on the horizon, it’s really important that everyone who is eligible to vote is properly registered,” she said.

“Look out for updates from your Electoral Registration Officer.

“That might come by email, letter, phone or even a knock on the door.”

If you’re not registered, she said, don’t wait take action.

“Make sure you respond to requests for information and register online if needed.

“It only takes a few minutes.”

Anyone unsure about their current status can contact the local electoral registration office by calling 0800 393 783.

It’s quick, easy, and ensures your voice is counted.
