Brendan O’Hara MP, who chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Scotch Whisky, said:

“Traditionally, World Whisky Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate the phenomenal success of the Scotch Whisky industry and to meet with others to enjoy the best of our national drink.

“This year presents us with time for reflection.

“The Scotch Whisky industry – particularly those smaller and independent distillers whose focus is on the export market – face tough challenges.

“The imposition of 25% US tariffs on single malt at the end of last year, coupled with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has made 2020 a difficult year for many.

“However, Scotch Whisky remains a premium product with worldwide appeal and we must all ensure that when markets reopen and damaging US tariffs are lifted, the industry can recover as quickly as possible.

“While strict social distancing rules mean we cannot gather with friends to enjoy a dram, I would encourage folk to join me – perhaps with something from a small or independent distiller – and toast the future success of the great Scotch Whisky industry.

“As Chair of the APPG on Scotch Whisky and MP for Argyll & Bute, I’ll be marking World Whisky Day with something – or perhaps a couple of somethings – from my constituency.”
