The ongoing and shameful saga surrounding Baroness Mone shows why the House of Lords must be abolished, says Scottish Green MSP Gillian Mackay.
Ms Mackay said:
“It is staggering that any 21st century democracy would choose to maintain such a severely dated and undemocratic chamber.
“The Michelle Mone scandal is only the tip of the iceberg.
“This whole shameful saga is reflective of a totally undemocratic system that entrenches power with a small and wealthy group of people, who have very little accountability.
“The House of Lords is a badly dated and undemocratic chamber that has been stuffed to the rafters with party cronies and donors who are appointed for life.
“There are good people who are doing their best to work within a broken system, but they shouldn’t have to.
“We can do much better than this.
“It is clear that one of the many advantages of Scottish independence is that it would allow us to finally move on from the Lords and become a proper functioning and modern democracy.”
