Helmsdale Primary pupils served up success in spectacular style at this year’s East Sutherland Schools Sports Association Badminton Tournament.
The event brought together young talent from seven primary schools across the region, including a visiting team from North West Sutherland.
Held at Golspie High School, the tournament saw a packed afternoon of action with all four courts constantly in play.

P6 and P7 pupils showcased impressive skill, stamina and sportsmanship in every rally.
After a series of closely fought matches, it was Helmsdale who stole the spotlight with a dominant showing.
In the boys’ competition, Shay Cowie of Helmsdale secured a well-earned first place.
He was followed by Jack Wilson of Dornoch in second, and fellow Helmsdale pupil Sholto Shaw in third.
Kaiden Robertson of Lairg finished in a strong fourth place, rounding off a high-quality boys’ tournament.
The girls’ matches were just as competitive, with Amelia Gordon of Helmsdale emerging victorious.
Second place went to Eva Murray, also from Helmsdale, making it a one-two finish for the school.
Gracey Ross from Dornoch came third, and fourth place was claimed by Marley Montgomery from North West Sutherland.
The tournament was made even more special thanks to the energy and enthusiasm of the pupils on court.
Elissa Stevenson, Active Schools Co-ordinator with High Life Highland, praised the spirit of the day.
She said it was fantastic to bring pupils together again for such a positive and active event.
The slightly revised tournament format allowed for greater participation from each school, which was warmly welcomed.
Elissa noted the excellent sportsmanship on display, with players cheering for teammates, sharing equipment and shaking hands after each match.
She extended her thanks to the Golspie High School Young Leaders – Rory, CJ and Andrew – for their help throughout the day.
Brandon from North West Sutherland Schools also received praise for his valuable support.
A special mention was given to PE Teacher Mrs Sutherland and volunteer Gayle MacRae for their efforts in helping the event run smoothly.
The afternoon was a clear triumph not just in results but in community spirit and camaraderie.
For Helmsdale, it was a proud moment to see their pupils shine on the court and take home top honours.
With such impressive performances from across the board, the future of badminton in Sutherland looks bright.
