Winter Arctic Blast Set to Sweep Across Highland Region

A dramatic shift in weather patterns will bring unseasonably cold temperatures to the Highlands this weekend, as meteorologists warn of significant snowfall and widespread disruption across northern Scotland.

The Met Office has issued a Yellow National Severe Weather Warning for snow and ice across the Highland region and Northern Isles, beginning Sunday afternoon and extending through Monday morning.

Highland communities are being advised to prepare for substantial snowfall, with accumulations of 1 to 3 centimetres expected at lower levels and up to 10 centimetres possible on ground above 300 metres.

The Arctic air mass will introduce treacherous conditions across Highland roads and pathways, with ice formation likely on untreated surfaces as temperatures plummet overnight.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Rebekah Hicks emphasises that this represents an unusually early winter cold spell, with the Highland region being the first to experience the full force of the incoming Arctic conditions.

Particular concern has been raised for elderly and vulnerable Highland residents, with Age Scotland’s Chief Executive Katherine Crawford highlighting the increased risks faced by older community members during severe weather events.

The Highland NHS 24 service is preparing for an increase in weather-related incidents, with Associate Medical Director Dr Siama Latif urging residents to check on vulnerable neighbours and ensure they have adequate supplies.

Local emergency services are mobilising to manage potential disruption, particularly focusing on maintaining access to essential services across remote Highland communities.

Weather forecasters predict the cold snap could persist well into next week, with the Highland region facing continued wintry showers and strong northerly winds.

Community resilience teams across the Highlands are activating their winter protocols, ensuring emergency accommodation and support services are ready for those who might need them.

Age Scotland has established a dedicated helpline (0800 12 44 222) for Highland residents requiring additional support or guidance during this challenging weather period.

NHS Highland is advising residents to stock up on essential medications and supplies, while emphasising the importance of proper home heating during this unprecedented early winter weather event.

The Highland Council’s gritting teams are being placed on high alert, with priority routes identified for continuous treatment throughout the severe weather period.
