The SNP has branded the Scottish Labour Leader Anas Sarwar “spineless” ahead of his speech at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, pointing to 5 ways he has failed to stand up for Scotland since Keir Starmer entered number 10.
The criticism comes following the Labour Party’s actions since the General Election which fly in the face of the promises Anas Sarwar made people in Scotland. Despite assurances that Scottish Labour would be influential in a Labour government, Keir Starmer’s government has:
- Ramped up austerity, imposing billions of pounds of cuts on Scotland;
- Slashed winter fuel payments for more than 800,000 of pensioners in Scotland;
- Failed to scrap the two child limit, a policy that is pushing 87,100 Scottish children into poverty;
- Engulfed itself in cronyism and,
- Disrespected devolution by pursuing a new law to allow the UK government to bypass the Scottish Parliament.
SNP Depute Leader, Keith Brown, said “Anas Sarwar should be apologising” to voters in Scotland when he speaks at his party conference and admit Scottish Labour is only serving Keir Starmer, not Scotland.
Commenting, SNP Depute Leader Keith Brown said:
“People is Scotland will be outraged to see Anas Sarwar parade around the Labour Party conference after his party has completely betrayed them since getting into power.
“Despite endless, arrogant assurances that Scottish Labour MPs would be Scotland’s voice at Westminster, it could not be clearer that Scottish Labour is serving Starmer, not Scotland.
“After promising there would be no austerity, to protect pensioners, to reduce child poverty, to end Westminster cronyism and to respect devolution – spineless Anas Sarwar has failed Scots on almost every count.
“The pledges Labour made during the General Election have been proven to be nothing more than empty electioneering and people in Scotland now know they cannot trust a word Anas Sarwar says.
“Anas Sarwar should be apologising for failing to do right by Scotland and for failing every voter who put their trust in Labour a few months ago.
“Whether it’s Liverpool or London, it’s clear Mr Sarwar’s loyalties will always lie with his Westminster bosses, and it is the people of Scotland who suffer as a result.”
