A Rare Opportunity to Work on One of Scotland’s Finest Salmon Fishing Beats

For anyone who loves the River Spey, its famous salmon fishing and the traditions that surround it, a rather special career opportunity has opened up in Moray.

Delfur Fishings, one of Scotland’s most respected salmon fishing beats, is looking to recruit a full time River Ghillie to join its established team near Rothes.

Situated on the Lower Spey, approximately ten miles from the river’s mouth, Delfur offers around two and a half miles of double bank fishing, with eleven named pools attracting anglers from across Britain and beyond.

Its reputation stretches back generations, with the famous Delfur Fancy salmon fly dating to the late Victorian era.

Today, the beat remains a sought after destination, offering guests the opportunity to enjoy traditional fly fishing under the guidance of experienced ghillies.

The successful applicant will join a team led by Head Ghillie Mark Melville, who has spent more than twenty seasons at Delfur and is a familiar figure in the Spey fishing community.

The position involves considerably more than helping visiting anglers catch salmon.

A River Ghillie plays an important role in caring for the river, maintaining fishing huts and equipment, looking after riverbanks and supporting habitat improvement work throughout the year.

There is also the pleasure of sharing local knowledge, helping guests understand the water and ensuring their time on the Spey is memorable.

Delfur is welcoming applications from experienced ghillies and enthusiastic individuals who are keen to learn the profession and develop their skills.

Candidates should enjoy working outdoors, take pride in providing excellent service and hold a full UK driving licence.

The employment package includes a housing allowance, competitive pension contributions, professional development opportunities and the provision of waders, jackets and traditional Delfur tweed clothing.

For someone seeking a career surrounded by some of Scotland’s finest river scenery, this is an opportunity to learn from an experienced team while contributing to the care of an internationally recognised salmon fishery.

The full time position is advertised on Highland Jobs, with applications closing on 25 December 2026.
