Ambitious Plans to Revive Falconer Museum Unveiled

The Falconer Museum in Forres could soon reopen its doors as fresh proposals outline a bold vision for its future under independent governance.

A newly crafted business model has shown that the museum can be financially sustainable if a new operating body takes charge.

Reports compiled by Culture Radar, in collaboration with key stakeholders, highlight a roadmap to revival.

The project has been backed by funding from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, and the reports are now available for public viewing.

Locals and organisations interested in shaping the museum’s future are encouraged to step forward by emailing forreschscheme@moray.gov.uk.

Key proposals include placing museum management in the hands of an independent body while Moray Council retains ownership of the building and collections.

Financial sustainability will be secured through a mix of council support, ticket sales, grant funding, and revenue from events and merchandise.

Reaccreditation from Museums Galleries Scotland will be a priority, boosting the museum’s credibility and unlocking further funding opportunities.

A revitalised museum is expected to drive tourism, education, and social wellbeing, delivering a significant boost to the local economy.

A structured five-year plan will see the museum gradually expand its operations, reaching full financial stability by year five.

Council Leader and Forres Ward member, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, welcomed the proposals and urged locals to get involved.

She highlighted that reopening the museum would enhance Forres’ cultural landscape and bring new opportunities for learning, tourism, and community engagement.

If enough local interest is shown, the proposals will be put before Moray Council for approval.

A partial reopening could be possible by 2026, with full operations expected within five years.

This could mark the start of an exciting new era for one of Forres’ most treasured institutions.
