Anas Sarwar has confirmed that Labour will continue to subject Scotland to a disastrous Brexit as he has backed plans to not take the UK back into the European Union.

Speaking to Andrew Marr on LBC, Sarwar said a Labour government ‘would not take us back into the EU’.

Demonstrating that no matter the party in government at Westminster, Scotland is still ignored and expected to suffer the consequences of Brexit.

It also marks a screeching u-turn from Sarwar who has previously supported European Union membership and remaining a part of the single market and customs union.

Commenting, SNP MSP Graeme Dey said:

“Labour is now standing shoulder to shoulder with the Tories in favour of a disastrous hard Brexit- demonstrating why Scotland needs to become independent from Westminster.

“The Scottish Government’s first series of papers on independence demonstrated how the UK is lagging behind independent neighbouring European countries similar to Scotland.

“Many of these factors can be put down to the disastrous Tory Brexit and now Anas Sarwar and Scottish Labour are filing in behind the Tories to impose Brexit on Scotland.

“No matter the party in government, Westminster control means that Scotland continues to be ignored and have disastrous UK policies implemented on us against our will.

“Anas Sarwar used to be a proud European, but now he and Scottish Labour are now officially a Brexit party, along with every other Westminster party in Scotland.

“There is no route back to the EU for Scotland within Westminster control, the only way for Scotland to return to the European Union is by becoming an independent country.”
