The Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has congratulated all Western Isles athletes competing at the Island Games in Guernsey.

There was also praise for swimmer Kara Hanlon who has been selected to represent Great Britain at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

Convener Kenny Macleod said:

“All of our Island Games athletes have done the Western Isles proud and on behalf of the people of our Islands I would like to congratulate each and every one of them, and the coaching teams, for their magnificent efforts in representing the Western Isles.

“Particular praise is due to our medal winners who won through against tough opposition.

“However, it has been a team effort and I know that our community is immensely proud of every one of our athletes”.

Meanwhile, 25 year old Kara Hanlon will make her worlds debut in the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, taking place between July 23 and 30.

Hanlon will be part of a 29-strong team heading to Japan.

Edinburgh University student Hanlon – who hails from Stornoway – represented Scotland in the 100m breaststroke at last year’s Commonwealth Games, and earlier this year defended her British title in the same discipline.

Convener Macleod said:

“Kara continues to fly the flag for the Western Isles and is an exceptional talent that we are all immensely proud of.

“This latest achievement again sets new standards in what has been an amazing swimming career.”
