Residents and businesses in Orkney are being encouraged to take part in public consultation events next month on proposals linked to the future growth of Hatston Harbour.
The consultation concerns plans for a change of use of land at Crowness, Hatston, which could help create additional operational space for Orkney Harbours.
The 11 hectare site, accessed from Grainshore Road, is currently used as a laydown and storage area associated with nearby harbour activities.
Under the proposals, the land would move from non operational agricultural use to operational harbour land, increasing the amount of space available to support harbour activities.
The project forms part of the first phase of Orkney Islands Council’s Harbours Masterplan, which includes ambitions to extend operations at Hatston Pier.
Before a major planning application can be submitted, developers are required to consult with local communities through a formal pre application process.
This includes submitting a Proposal of Application Notice and holding public events where people can learn more about the plans and provide feedback.
The planning process is being managed by HRI Munro Architecture on behalf of Orkney Islands Council.
Two drop in sessions have been arranged at the St Magnus Centre in Kirkwall, giving members of the public the opportunity to examine the proposals, ask questions and discuss the plans with members of the project team.
The consultation events will take place in Room 2 of the St Magnus Centre on Wednesday 8 July and Wednesday 22 July between 6pm and 9pm.
Feedback forms will be available at both sessions and comments can be submitted until 17 August.
Organisers have stressed that feedback gathered during the consultation process does not form part of any future planning application representation.
Instead, it provides an opportunity for communities to share views, concerns and suggestions before a formal planning application is lodged.
If proposals progress through the planning system, there will be a further opportunity for people to submit comments directly to the Planning Authority.
Hatston Harbour has become an increasingly important asset for Orkney’s economy, supporting maritime industries, cruise activity and growing opportunities linked to renewable energy and marine development.
The consultation process represents an early stage in shaping how the harbour may continue to evolve in the years ahead.
