Consultation Opens on Proposed Moray Taxi Fare Increase

Moray Council has launched a public consultation on proposals to increase the maximum fares charged by taxis operating across Moray.

The review forms part of the council’s legal requirement to reassess taxi fares every 18 months as the licensing authority for local operators.

Under the proposals, the maximum fare for the first mile would increase from £3.96 to £4.00.

Additional distance charges would also rise from 33 pence to 35 pence for every extra tenth of a mile travelled.

The council stressed that the proposed figures represent the maximum fares taxi operators are allowed to charge and that drivers can still choose to charge less.

The consultation will remain open until Friday 24 July 2026.

Responses gathered during the consultation period will then be considered by the Licensing Committee before any final decision is made.

Chair of Moray Council’s Licensing Committee, Tracy Colyer, said:

“With rising fuel costs, we understand that it’s a difficult time for both taxi operators and consumers.

“This means it’s increasingly important to have fare structure in place that reflects current conditions, while remaining fair and reasonable.”

The proposed increase comes as transport operators across Scotland continue to face rising operating costs including fuel, insurance and vehicle maintenance.
