Continued funding for the Wick-Aberdeen air service has been welcomed as a vital boost for the North Highlands.
The Highland Council has confirmed that the Scottish Government will maintain financial support for the Public Service Obligation (PSO) route into the 2025/26 financial year.
The Scottish Government will provide up to £1 million in funding, matching previous years, with The Highland Council continuing its own contribution of £300,000.
This decision follows the submission of the final output report from the Wick John O’Groats Airport Working Group, which detailed significant opportunities for sustainable service delivery and regional economic growth.
Council Leader Raymond Bremner, who also chairs the Working Group, expressed his delight at the news, describing the funding as essential for the community.
He emphasised the crucial role the air service plays in connecting the North Highlands to employment, education, healthcare and leisure opportunities.
He said the announcement shows clear recognition from the Scottish Government of the importance of this lifeline route to the region.
The Working Group’s report outlined the strategic role Wick John O’Groats Airport will play in the coming years, supporting economic expansion and regional connectivity.
The continued PSO support will also provide local stakeholders with much-needed certainty as they work towards long-term solutions for the airport’s sustainability.
Cllr Bremner highlighted the power of partnership working in securing this funding and commended those involved in compiling the report and advancing the group’s objectives.
He reaffirmed The Highland Council’s commitment to collaborating with partners across the North Highlands, Highlands & Islands Airports Ltd and Transport Scotland.
Ensuring the long-term viability of Wick John O’Groats Airport remains a key priority for local and national stakeholders.
The Wick-Aberdeen route has been described as a lifeline service, essential for keeping communities connected in one of Scotland’s most remote areas.
This continued investment signals confidence in the region’s future and its potential for sustained economic and social development.
