Education trust funds totalling £7 million are now accepting applications, offering grants, bursaries, scholarships, and funding for schools and sports.

Applications can be submitted from 6 January to 28 February 2025, with successful applicants receiving awards in March 2025.

Councillor Drew Millar, Chair of the Education Trust Fund Sub-Committee, highlighted the significance of these funds, which are held by The Highland Council on behalf of generous benefactors who aimed to support education in Highland communities.

Efforts to simplify the application process ensure these funds can benefit children, young people, and adult learners, fulfilling the intentions of those who established the trusts.

Cllr Millar encouraged individuals to visit the newly launched education trust fund website to explore the range of available funds and check their eligibility.

He also urged community representatives, educators, and sports organisations to raise awareness about the scheme to ensure as many people as possible can access the support on offer.

Some of the trust fund bequests date back to the 19th century, including one from John Macdonald of Exeter, son of the renowned Flora MacDonald.

John Macdonald, born on 30 October 1759 at Kingsburgh House on the Isle of Skye, pursued a distinguished military career as a lieutenant-colonel and military engineer.

A Fellow of the Royal Society and the Society of Antiquaries, Macdonald passed away on 16 August 1831 in Exeter, where he was laid to rest in Exeter Cathedral.

With such a rich history behind these funds, they continue to play a vital role in shaping the future of education and opportunities for people across Highland communities.

If you or someone you know could benefit, now is the time to apply.
