Emergency works will begin tomorrow, 10 February, at the A96 and A9 Raigmore interchange in Inverness to protect gas supplies to homes and businesses across the area.
Gas network company SGN has confirmed that a lane closure will be put in place to allow safety critical work on a high pressure gas pipeline.
The project involves replacing a section of the gas network and is expected to take around 15 weeks to complete.
SGN had originally planned to carry out gas network reinforcement works at the interchange in March 2026, but investigations carried out over the weekend identified a section of pipeline in urgent need of replacement.
The company said the issue must be addressed immediately to prevent the risk of gas supplies being lost to Inverness.
To minimise disruption, SGN is working closely with BEAR Scotland, which is already undertaking planned works at the interchange.
Both organisations say they are coordinating activities to deliver the work as safely and efficiently as possible.
A westbound lane closure will be in place between the Inverness Retail Park Roundabout and the B865 Milburn Road while the works are carried out.
SGN has said it will use night-time and weekend working where possible to reduce disruption on what is one of the city’s busiest routes.
SGN engineering manager Gordon Lee said:
“This work is safety critical.
“If it is not completed now, there is a risk of gas supplies being lost to Inverness.
“Due to the urgent nature of the issue, advance notice of the works was not possible.
“I’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to commuters and the local community.
“To allow our work to be carried out safely, a westbound lane closure will be in place between the Inverness Retail Park Roundabout and the B865 Milburn Road.
“We know this is a very busy route and we’ll be doing everything possible to reduce disruption, including night-time and weekend working where feasible.
“I’d like to thank the local community and motorists for their patience and support while this essential work is carried out to keep gas flowing safely to Inverness.”
Motorists are being advised to allow extra time for journeys and follow signage while the emergency works are under way.
