A programme of exercise for those affected by cancer is being offered by High Life Highland (HLH).
Macmillan Move More offers physical activity and support for those recently diagnosed or those that have completed treatment.
HLH Activities Development Officer Eilidh MacLean said:
“We offer the programme online and in-person at Inverness Leisure and classes are varied to offer activity suited to individual needs – whether brand new to physical activity or for those comfortable with fitness classes.
“Move More is based on research showing the significant benefit physical activity can have before, during and after treatment for cancer.
“Not only does physical activity benefit physical health building strength and improving flexibility, it also provides mental health benefits that can reduce anxiety and improve confidence.”
The classes offered include stretching, mobility, building muscle and improving balance to help develop people’s overall fitness.
Online classes take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and a face-to-face circuit class takes place at Inverness Leisure Centre on Monday afternoons.
This class provides exercises for all over the body and a chance to socialise with other individuals taking part in Move More.
Consultant Nurse-Cancer Care at NHS Highland Chrissie Lane said:
“Having a range of activities and support available for people affected by cancer to increase the amount of movement and physical active they participate in is vitally important.
“The classes being offered by High Life Highland are a really important aspect of the improvements we are developing in Highland to help prepare people for their treatments and their recovery.
“This partnership approach between NHS Highland, High Life Highland and Macmillan Cancer Support has been running successfully for several years and I look forward to it continuing to go from strength to strength for the benefit of people affected by cancer.
“My clinical colleagues and I would highly recommend anybody who has had a cancer diagnosis to get involved in the activities being offered.”
The programme can also advise on other activities or classes at leisure facilities across the Highlands and links with other groups such as walking groups.
