The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) has announced the appointment of two distinguished professionals as new Chairs to lead the boards of UHI Inverness and UHI Moray, strengthening the region’s educational and community ties with global expertise.

Victoria Erasmus, a prominent business leader in the Highland capital, will take on her new role as Chair of the UHI Inverness board in January 2025, bringing her rich portfolio of experience to the university’s strategic goals.

As Director of Glen Mhor Hotel and Apartments, UileBheist Brewery/Distillery, and the Energy Centre in Inverness, as well as a founder of The South African Children’s Charitable Trust, Erasmus has long been a powerful advocate for community-led initiatives.

Adding to her accomplishments, Erasmus is Co-Chair of Visit Inverness Loch Ness and a Non-Executive Director of Skills Development Scotland, positions that underline her commitment to both tourism and workforce development in the Highlands.

In December 2024, Eilidh Kennedy McLean MBE will assume her position as Chair of UHI Moray, bringing more than 20 years of diplomatic and government service to her new role.

McLean’s background includes work as an Advisor for the United Nations, Country Director for the British Council in Saudi Arabia, and Head of the Gulf region, with specialisation in equality, diversity, and partnership development in education.

Her experience in curriculum innovation and team-building across diverse sectors positions her to foster dynamic progress at UHI Moray, focusing on creating meaningful change for students and communities alike.

UHI Moray is also set to welcome Roddy Burns, former Chief Executive of Moray Council, as an independent board member, bringing his substantial public service expertise to the institution.

Meanwhile, UHI Inverness’s board will gain Barbara Nelson, former HM Inspector of Education, and David Stewart, former MP and MSP, whose backgrounds in education and public service will enhance the board’s vision and strategy.

These voluntary roles, filled through a highly competitive recruitment process, highlight the calibre and dedication of individuals committed to advancing UHI’s regional impact.

Alastair MacColl, UHI’s Chair of Court, lauded the new appointments, noting that each appointee brings “outstanding expertise” that will “help UHI continue to make learning mean more, for each and every one of our students and the communities we serve.”

With these appointments, UHI reaffirms its commitment to innovative education and the development of students ready to make their mark on the world, backed by leaders who truly understand the Highland spirit and the global stage.
