A teenager from Halkirk has been hailed a national hero after stepping in to save his father’s life during a terrifying accident at home.

Seventeen-year-old John Bremner has been named ‘Young First Aid Hero’ at this year’s Scottish First Aid Awards in Glasgow.

The event, run by St Andrew’s First Aid, recognises extraordinary people who have used first aid to make a difference.

John was honoured for his quick thinking and bravery after his dad suffered a deep and dangerous cut while laying carpet in their home.

The accident happened on 1st April 2024, when his father accidentally sliced open his forearm with a Stanley knife.

The four-inch wound was bleeding heavily, and panic quickly set in.

Without missing a beat, John sprang into action and took full control of the situation.

He pressed firmly on the wound to stem the bleeding and elevated his dad’s arm to reduce the flow.

He calmly lowered him to the floor to prevent shock and stayed composed throughout.

John then rang for an ambulance while keeping his father calm and stable.

Using towels, he dressed the wound and created a makeshift sling to support the injured arm.

He even accompanied his dad to hospital, offering comfort throughout the journey.

John credits the Army Cadets for teaching him the lifesaving skills that made all the difference that day.

Speaking after receiving the award, he said he was proud but more thankful that he could be there when his father needed him most.

He said first aid is something everyone should learn, as it could be needed at any time.

His humility and courage impressed the judges, who described him as a shining example of what it means to be a first aid hero.

Stuart Callison, chief executive of St Andrew’s First Aid, praised John’s level-headed and decisive actions.

He said John’s response was both heroic and mature, and he was a credit to his family and community.

The awards ceremony was held at Glasgow’s Radisson Blu and welcomed over 350 guests.

Comedian Ray Bradshaw hosted the evening, which also featured a performance by X Factor’s Nicky McDonald.

There were over 70 nominations across ten categories, all showcasing acts of lifesaving skill and selflessness.

The event also raised more than £23,000 to support first aid training across the country.

It was a night full of inspiration, but one that belonged to John Bremner, a young man from Halkirk whose calm under pressure made all the difference.
