The serene streets of Elgin were shattered by a devastating incident that claimed the life of a dedicated bus driver in a shocking act of unprovoked violence.

Keith Rollinson, a 58-year-old experienced driver with a distinguished background in the Royal Air Force, met a tragic end following a brutal assault at the local bus station in February.

The perpetrator, a teenage boy who was 15 at the time of the incident, launched a vicious attack after being refused entry to a bus service due to his intoxicated state.

Mr Rollinson, displaying professional concern for passenger safety, had asked other passengers to evacuate while seeking guidance from colleagues on managing the volatile situation.

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the young offender unleashed a barrage of punches, targeting Mr Rollinson’s head and body with unrestrained aggression.

The married father ultimately succumbed to his injuries, suffering a fatal cardiac arrest in hospital.

The High Court in Inverness delivered its verdict today (Monday 18 November), sentencing the teenager to four years and four months in custody.

Judge Lady Hood emphasised the absolute necessity of detention, leaving no room for alternative sentencing.

Stagecoach North Scotland expressed profound grief, stating their unwavering commitment to staff and passenger safety.

The company has been collaborating closely with local authorities, including the Moray Council’s Community Safety Team, to address ongoing concerns about antisocial behaviour at the Elgin bus station.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of unchecked aggression and the devastating impact of momentary violence on families, communities, and innocent individuals simply performing their daily duties.
