The Scottish Labour Party Conference, held at the Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre, Glasgow, at the weekend, saw a dazzling display from the Highland Labour contingent.

First recipient of the McAllister Award, William Campbell of Nairn – was clearly in excellent company as he witnessed long-serving, dedicated Labour campaigner Norman MacAskill receive the Keir Hardie Award.

Then local Councillors Michael Gregson (Inverness) and Ben Williams (Fochabers & Lhanbryde) presented powerful Motions which were warmly supported.

Inverness & Nairn Party asked a Scottish Labour Government to act on the many issues raised by the recent report on Human Rights in the Highlands & islands, by the Scottish Human Rights Commission.

And Moray Labour Party demanded upgrading of the A96.

Michael said:

“With MSP Rhoda Grant speaking on several occasions concerning Housing, Land Reform and other important issues, I think Highland Labour gave a good account of itself.

“Our concerns about the realities facing people across both the urban and rural areas of the Highlands, from Health Services to Education, Housing, Roads and Transport connectivity, are deeply felt.

“After 14 years of the Conservatives, people wanted change.

“UK Labour are currently grappling with big challenges.

“And here in Scotland we have to get better government after 17 years of the SNP.

“The Scottish Conference confirmed that we have the right agenda here in the North, and I am confident that we will gain success in the 2026 Holyrood elections.”
