A major Highland transport artery has resumed operations as the A828 between Ledaig and Benderloch welcomes traffic back following intensive emergency rock stabilisation works.

BEAR Scotland’s skilled teams have successfully completed a challenging operation to remove a precarious 25-tonne rock formation that threatened to crash onto the vital route linking our coastal communities.

The emergency response, which began on Thursday 14 November, saw swift action to protect essential underground utilities from potential devastating impact of falling debris.

Local businesses and residents faced a complete closure of the trunk road, alongside the adjacent National Cycle Route 78 and pedestrian footway, as specialist teams employed rope access techniques and crane operations to ensure public safety.

Highland motorists can now navigate the section under temporary traffic signal control, allowing BEAR Scotland’s experts to maintain vigilant monitoring of the rock face.

Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, expressed his satisfaction with the operation’s success, emphasising their unwavering commitment to public safety throughout the challenging works.

The reopening marks a significant relief for our Highland communities, particularly the businesses and residents of Ledaig and Benderloch, who demonstrated remarkable patience during the essential closure.

Transport Scotland’s swift response through BEAR Scotland showcases the dedication to maintaining safe travel routes throughout our Highland region, even in the face of unexpected natural challenges.

Local business owners have welcomed the reopening, noting the vital importance of the A828 to the area’s economic wellbeing and daily community life.

The Highland Times understands that monitoring will continue at the site, ensuring the long-term stability of the rock face and the safety of all who travel this crucial coastal route.

This rapid response and successful resolution demonstrates the effectiveness of our Highland infrastructure teams in managing unexpected challenges while prioritising community safety.
