Highlands Hit Hard as Swinney Pushes Plan to Cut Bills

John Swinney has said the Highlands are on the front line of the cost of living crisis, as he set out the SNP’s plans to reduce household bills ahead of polling day.

Campaigning across the region, the First Minister said the election presents a clear opportunity to deliver measures aimed at easing pressure on families.

Among the proposals outlined are a legal price cap on essential foods in major supermarkets, expanded childcare support and grants of up to £10,000 to help first time buyers with deposits.

The party has also pledged to extend the £2 bus fare cap nationwide, building on measures already in place in parts of the Highlands and Islands.

Swinney said the impact of rising costs is being felt particularly strongly in rural areas.

“There are now just days left in this campaign and it is clear that the momentum is with the SNP as our positive, ambitious policies to support people with the cost of living are heard.

“There are now only days until we have the opportunity to elect a government on Scotland’s side that will support people during tough times.

“That is particularly true in the Highlands which is on the front line of the cost of living crisis, being hit hard on the cost of energy and fuel, while Westminster sits back and provides no help.

“I want to take action to support people, reducing the cost of people in Scotland’s daily commute, capping the cost of essential foods in supermarkets and bringing down electricity bills with the fresh start of independence.

“The SNP wants to lower your bills and the other parties are trying to stop us.

“They want people to vote for an opposition to stop things happening, I am asking people to vote for an SNP Government to get things done.

“The best way to ensure we can deliver is by electing a majority SNP Government, one that supports people with the cost of living, locks out Nigel Farage and delivers the fresh start of independence.

“But we have to make it happen.

“That opportunity is in Scotland’s hands and on Thursday we can grasp it by voting SNP for a government on Scotland’s side and for my reliable, trusted leadership that will support people with the cost of living.”

The comments come as parties continue to focus on the rising cost of living, with energy prices, transport costs and food bills dominating the campaign.

For many in the Highlands, where travel distances are greater and fuel costs higher, the issue remains a central concern.

John Swinney has said the SNP’s plans aim to reduce costs for households, as the election campaign enters its final days across Scotland.
