It’s Not Too Late to Protect Yourself With Winter Vaccines

With winter illnesses on the rise, NHS Highland is urging those who have not yet received their free flu and COVID-19 vaccines to get protected before the COVID-19 winter offer ends on 31 January.

Cold weather often brings a surge in coughs, colds, and flu-like illnesses as people spend more time indoors in close contact with others.

This year’s winter vaccination programme is prioritising those most at risk, including older adults, people with underlying health conditions like heart or respiratory disease, and those with weakened immune systems.

Pregnant women are also strongly encouraged to take up the vaccines to safeguard both themselves and their babies from serious illness caused by flu and COVID-19.

Frontline health and social care workers are eligible for both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines, while all NHS staff can receive the flu vaccine this winter.

If you’re unsure about your eligibility or want to check local drop-in clinic details, visit: www.nhsinform.scot/wintervaccines.

The COVID-19 vaccination offer will end on 31 January, but the flu vaccine will remain available until the end of March.

Dr Tim Allison, Director of Public Health for NHS Highland, emphasised the importance of getting vaccinated, stating:

“Vaccination is still the best way to protect yourself and others, and we strongly encourage everyone who is eligible in Highland and Argyll and Bute to come forward.”

He explained that the flu virus evolves over time and that COVID-19 vaccine protection diminishes, which is why topping up immunity with this season’s vaccines is essential to guard against severe illness.

Drop-in clinics have been set up across NHS Highland to make vaccinations as accessible as possible.

Information on clinic locations and times is available on the NHS Highland website or by calling the Service Delivery Centre on 08000 320 339.

The push to increase vaccination uptake comes as health experts warn of the heightened risks associated with flu and COVID-19 during the winter months, particularly for vulnerable groups.

By getting vaccinated, individuals can help reduce pressure on healthcare services and protect themselves, their families, and their communities from preventable illnesses.

As the end-of-January deadline for COVID-19 vaccinations approaches, NHS Highland is urging eligible residents to act quickly to take advantage of the free vaccines.

The flu vaccine, available until late March, provides an extended opportunity for those who still need protection against seasonal illness.

Whether you are part of an at-risk group, a healthcare worker, or simply someone looking to stay healthy this winter, now is the time to prioritise your wellbeing and get vaccinated.

Don’t wait until it’s too late—check your eligibility, find a clinic near you, and protect yourself this winter.
