Kate Forbes Urges Holiday Shoppers to Think Before They BBQ

Highlands MSP Kate Forbes has thrown her weight behind fresh advice urging shoppers to act responsibly when using disposable barbecues this Easter.

With warmer weather on the horizon and families heading outdoors, the Scottish Retail Consortium is reminding the public of the dangers posed by careless BBQ use.

Its guidance encourages retailers to educate customers about the safe use and disposal of disposable barbecues, especially during dry spells when wildfire risks soar.

The SRC’s voluntary guidelines were developed in partnership with fire and rescue services and BBQ manufacturers.

Shops are being asked to display clear information on packaging, in-store signage, and digital platforms to ensure the message reaches as many customers as possible.

Simple steps like keeping BBQs away from flammable areas, never leaving them unattended, and fully cooling them before disposal can dramatically reduce the risk of wildfire.

The advice also includes avoiding enclosed spaces, using buckets of water or sand as a safety backup, and tipping cooled ashes onto bare soil, not into bins.

Retailers are also encouraged to work more closely with local councils and emergency services when extreme heat events are expected.

Kate Forbes, who represents Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, has previously hosted a wildfire summit to discuss prevention across the Highlands and Scotland.

She says wildfires remain a serious and growing concern, even if the early Spring still feels chilly.

Forbes warned that one small lapse in judgement could have devastating consequences for communities and the environment.

She praised the industry for acting responsibly and called on all retailers to embrace the guidance fully.

Forbes also stressed the public’s role in keeping the countryside safe, especially during dry and windy weather.

She urged people to follow local rules, stay informed, and use common sense when lighting BBQs outdoors.

David Lonsdale, Director of the Scottish Retail Consortium, said disposable barbecues can be a great way to enjoy the outdoors, but only if used sensibly.

He echoed the need for public awareness and responsible disposal, calling it essential for a safe and enjoyable Spring and Summer.

With the Easter break bringing more people to beaches, hillsides and beauty spots, the message is clear—enjoy the BBQ, but respect the land.

A moment’s carelessness could lead to destruction that takes years to recover from.

Every ember matters.
